Through teleconference, The Conversation Series assembles foundation and nonprofit representatives, community organizers, and philanthropists committed to progressive change in the southeastern United States. The intention is to strengthen relationships among changemakers representing key roles in social justice philanthropy. The Conversation Series promotes open discussion to increase an understanding and awareness of the challenges associated with social justice philanthropy in the South, with the goal of expanding support for opportunities that will build resources for the region. Conversations are facilitated in a manner that promotes the organic development of relationships and support networks across various sectors, issues, and regions.

The first Conversation Series was launched on April 20, 2010. There were approximately 90 participants on the teleconference representing various foundations, nonprofits and affinity groups, as well as community organizers and donors. The conversation focused on themes presented in Dr. Emmett Carson’s keynote address “Reflections on Social Justice and Foundations.”

The 3 panelists: William Buster, WK Kellogg Foundation; Jocelyn Sargent, PhD, WK Kellogg Foundation; and Gladys K. Washington, Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation shared valuable insights from their personal and professional experiences surrounding social justice philanthropy in the South.

Southern Partners Fund looks forward to continuing the positive momentum of The Conversation Series! The next teleconference will be held in the Fall of 2010 and will take an in depth look at the landscape and field of community organizing in the South. Please check our website to stay connected on the date and related materials for the next Conversation Series.
